Happy Birthday Mertle!

In case you didn't know, today is Mertle Edmond's birthday. Don't feel bad, we didn't know either.

Mertle is Aubrey's "imaginary" friend. We use imaginary loosely because Mertle is an actual character in the Lilo & Stich movies from Disney. Aubrey really likes the movies and TV show. A few months back (later summer-early fall) Mertle began hanging out with Aubrey here at our house.

She doens't do too much. A lot of the time Aubrey's teaching her things she's already learned, such as how to go the whole night without wetting the bed, how to swim underwater, etc.

At first we weren't too sure about this friend since Mertle is actually a little mean on the show. However, she's never mean in our house. Dr. Olsen, our pediatrician, assured us it is very normal and very okay to have such a friend--makes her more creative in life!

We've learned a couple things about imaginary friends, the most important being- You can't take them away as a punishment!

Aubrey didn't give us much advance notice for Mertle's birthday. Once we were done with dinner she announced to us it was her birthday and she was off to make her a cake. Well, we couldn't have Mertle missing out on a family celebration. So I got out the Girl Scout cookies (Thin Mints) and Mertle got to have a cookie as well as the rest of the family.

Happy Birthday Mertle!

I have a class with about 8 5-7 year olds and about five of them have imaginary friends!

Tell Aubrey that her friend Sharon wishes Mertle a VERY Happy Birthday! :-)
