Samson, a dear friend
This is Samson, from the Bible (Judges 13-16)
Aubrey made him in Kid's City a couple months back while we were going through Proverbs. The lesson was on choosing friends wisely. So they went through the story of how Samson didn't choose wisely in trusting Delilah with the information about how he believed his hair is where he got his strength.
So the project was to make Samson with grass for hair. They took a nylon stocking, stuffed it with wood mulch chips and grass seed. Tied it, glued some eyes on it and decorated it's holding cup. The family instructions were to simply keep water in the cup and watch his "hair" grow. And grow it did. It became very lush! Here is Samson's hair about a couple weeks after making him.
We LOVE Kid's City. Their practical tools to the lessons, such as this one, is only one reasons why it's so great. Anyhow, the one thing Kid's City didn't to do was to prepare the parents on how to get rid of Samson when he "dies". You see, Aubrey has become VERY attached to dear Samson. He's graced our kitchen table for a couple months. Unfortunately, his hair has seen much better days.
A deep conditioning would not help. Anyhow, we have been trying to prepare Aubrey that Samson needs to go on to better things. I tried 3 nights ago to send him on and that was met by sobs, actually, near hysteria, from Aubrey (she can be quite dramatic). So he continued to sit on our table, dying hair and all.
Tonight, however, had to be the night. He had to go. So with Rudy's help we tried everything to coax her into kissing him goodbye and sending him on his way. No dice! Aubrey wasn't having it.
As she held the cup, crying big crocodile tears, we walked to the trash can. She diverted and headed for the family room. Good thing Rudy didn't push in his chair. The block though launched Samson from the cup to the floor. Aubrey in a state of confusion looked in the wrong direction as Rudy scooped up Samson and put him on a high shelf where she couldn't see him. *Phew* Aubrey, in a desperate search for him is about to dive into the trash can when we, oh so brilliantly, realized that she could keep her decorated cup and use it for something else. Through this wild episode, we decided a way to utilize part of Samson- the cup- would be to get some seeds or another baby plant to grow and nurture. She was okay with it. That and the fact she got an extended bubble bath and double the stories at bed time.
Bye Bye Samson! You'll be missed!
